In a Vase on Monday: My Vase Runneth Over

Today’s vase quite simply celebrates abundance and the best the garden has to offer. Almost all of the blooms in this chunky rectangular glass vase came from the cuttings beds and were picked purely for their gloriousness and without any consideration of colour combination. The joy of being able to pick such a quantity of blooms, such a variety of colour, such a variation in shape and formation is barely describable and the above photo does not really do the end result justice. Holding the posy in my hands before placing it in the vase was a moment of pure joy and contentment with the garden and everything in it.

Within the abundance you may see several dahlias (Jowey Winnie, Glow, Duet, Karma Serena, Happy Halloween, Reggae orange, Happy Single Juliet, unknown large yellow), sunflower Italian White, Inula magnifica, Cosmos Click Cranberry, Larkspur Sublime Deep Blue, Alonsoa Scarlet, Antirrhinum Overture Rose, Amaranthus viridis, Salvia Neon, Cornflower Black Ball, Alstromeria Indian Chief, Daucus carota, Veronica spicata and maybe other things I have forgotten:

Do you have abundance of your own to share In a Vase on Monday, or maybe only slim pickings? Either can bring you pleasure during the week so please do see what you can find to pop in your vase and share it with us by leaving links in the usual way.

  2. What a gorgeous celebration Cathy! I just love all that colour, so many shapes and textures too – a feast!
    Here’s mine: https://daffodilwild.wordpress.com/2017/07/03/fox-and-cubs-in-a-giraffe-on-monday/

  3. Your arrangement totally sums up that feeling of joy Cathy. I love the contrast of the spikes (is that the Veronica?) and the draping Amaranthus (I think) too. And hurrah for your Cosmos coming into flower. I also love the look of the dark cornflower on the left in the first photo- is that Black Ball?
My arrangement couldn’t really be much more of a contrast to yours! https://warwickshiregardener.wordpress.com/2017/07/03/in-a-vase-on-monday-all-white-with-me/

    • Cathy says:

Yes to the veronica, and to Black Ball; the cosmos have ben flowering for over a month, although now less sporadically than at first. I am glad you felt the joy too 🙂

Glorious! I am smitten with those dahlias – gorgeous colours and it all looks wonderful in one big posy. 🙂 Enjoy your week i the garden Cathy! Her is my post for today: https://wordsandherbs.com/2017/07/03/in-a-vase-on-monday-weird-and-wonderful/

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Cathy – and there are still more varieties to come – Karma Serena is the only one of my new tubers that is flowering (I did have it before but it didn’t survive the winter so I added it to my PN order)

Wow! That really has the feeling of a full summer extravaganza and suits the word ‘Gloriousness’ perfectly. Mine is quite a contrast to yours as well 🙂 https://absentgardener.com/2017/07/03/in-a-vase-on-monday-poppy-and-lime/

  8. It is a pure joy, and lovely to see a little cornflower tucked in. My weeks Vase https://theevergreendiary.com/2017/07/03/in-a-vase-on-monday-lazarus-hydrangea/

    • Cathy says:

Thank you and welcome to IAVOM. My cornflowers have not amounted to much in recent years but are making up for it this year, I am pleased to say

  9. Lyn King says:

So beautiful. Can I contribute to In a vase on Monday if I don’t have a blog?

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Lyn – you would be welcome to but I am not sure how you could do it…. any suggestions? I don’t have Facebook or Instagram but if you did could you provide a link to the IAVOM posts here? You could describe your vase in a comment for those who couldn’t see it – but the main thing is for you to pick and plonk and enjoy your own vase whether you share it or not. It is such a good habit to get into 🙂

Your abundant bouquet this week makes me think of an erupting volcano with flowing lava! It has the best that summer has to offer – I love the dahlias esp. Thanks for sharing your joy.

That is just Fab Cathy…reminds me of colourful prints, but you have managed to combine colours ranging from orange to soft pink with panache. Love the black background too. I raise my glass to you: http://noellemace.blogspot.co.uk/2017/07/in-vase-on-monday-raising-my-glass.html

  12. What mouth-watering colours, Cathy. Makes me think of Opal Fruits!

Perfection! Especially true since you felt to your core such deep satisfaction with the garden, I find it inspiring. My vase today is:

In A Vase On Monday – A Little Lime

    • Cathy says:

Yes, it definitely was from deep within, Susie – we are so privileged to have a garden space and to be able to grow things, aren’t we?

  14. Goodness – more is more! What a joyful vase of abundance. I love the jumble of merry colours – it must be even more energising to look at in person! Mine is here (not quite so much abundance but I too have gone for joyful colour): https://edinburghgardendiary.com/2017/07/03/all-the-colours-of-the-sun/

    • Cathy says:

I blame the dahlias! By the way, Cafe au Lait is not ready to flower yet but watch out for it in a vase in due course!!

  15. What a colorful winsome cornucopia of blooms. Happy IAVOM.

  16. In the 60s I had a very festive dress the color was called Tutti Frutti, I think the vase is Tutti Frutti exuberance and those Dahlias, outstanding! Happy Summer. Here is my vase. https://theshrubqueen.wordpress.com/2017/07/03/in-a-vase-on-monday-frangipani-foccacia-and-friends/

  20. I let out a gasp of pure pleasure when your blog came up and I saw your flowers. Stunning to say the least. I am growing an alstromeria for the first time and love it. Supposedly hardy in my zone but we shall see. My vase for today is here: http://www.lindabrazill.com/each_little_world/2017/07/in-a-vase-on-monday-.html

    • Cathy says:

So good to be able to share my pleasure with you and other bloggers Linda. Good luck with your alstromeria. I bought some from a specialist a few years ago but they did nothing but the ones I have now look much happier and this one is in its 3rd year of flowering so must be reasonably well established

  21. Patsi says:

I envy you…sooo many different flowers. The dahlias are to kill for. Awesome colors and Arrangement !!! http://www.pseewald.com/2017/07/in-vase-monday.html

    • Cathy says:

Planting out only began in the cutting beds at the beginning of May, but in two months they are competely transformed – I am thrilled with them and their abundance Patsi

  22. What a glorious explosion of colour and shape Cathy, love the Dahlias too, each flower brings out the same colour in the next flower, wonderful. Here is my vase up here in the Scottish borders

    • Cathy says:

Thanks QBG – I especially like the dahlias before they are fully out and blowsy and am determined to keep cutting to encourage more blooms

  23. Gerri says:

Absolutely gorgeous! The colors are amazing!

  26. Kris P says:

Your vase does indeed runneth over – and it explodes with color too! Much as I love your dahlias, it’s the amaranth that grabbed my attention. I’m still waiting for the dahlias I planted from tubers this year to bloom, and wondering if they ever will but, in the meantime, the lisianthus are filling the gap. Thanks for hosting, Cathy! Here’s my post: https://krispgarden.blogspot.com/2017/07/in-vase-on-monday-begging-to-be-picked.html

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Kris – its’ the intensity of the Happy Halloween dahlia that my eyes focus on when I look at this vase…. Hope your dahlias serve yo well this year – but at least you have lisianthus and I haven’t! (those blue ones, I hope…)

Stunning Abundance! Love the amaranth. Our garden has Hopi Red Dye amaranth that self seeds, not ready yet but I look forward to the arrival. My offering this Monday…https://hilltopflowers.wordpress.com/2017/07/03/in-a-vase-on-monday-7-3-17/

    • Cathy says:

And can your amaranthus be used as a natural dye? Don’t think the amaranthus we grow in the UK self seeds, certainly hasn’t done up to now – but germination is always excellent so I can see why it could self seed

  29. jenhumm116 says:

Oo, that really is summer in a vase, gorgeous!

    Here’s mine

I love that abundance of your garden, such a great mixture of colours, shapes and textures!Nature is so generous to us! This is my vase: http://timpingradina.blogspot.ro/2017/07/in-vase-on-monday-tall-ones-in-rain.html

  31. Cathy that wonderful abundance of flowers and colors in such a beautiful bouquet that says Summer! The Dahlias are very pretty, the beautiful Amaranthus viridis. I love so much colorful abundance. Greetings from Margarita.

  32. Anna says:

Wow!!! I imagine that you had mega goosebumps when you put that vase together Cathy. Such vibrant rich colour as well as a plethora of treasures. It’s what that seed sowing, pricking out, potting on and tuber planting etc. is all about. I love the little insect who is appreciating the inula close -up. My vase is late today as I’ve been out celebrating a rather special achievement (not mine I hasten to add) :
    https://greentapestry.blogspot.co.uk/2017/07/in-vase-on-monday-sparkle.html

    • Cathy says:

Yes, that’s definitely it, Anna – rejoicing in the fruits of my labours – although I wasn’t conscious of that at the time as all these activities are just ‘routine’ things I do. I was a ware of the insect, a hoverfly I think, at the time and was trying to include him mid hover but he was determined to land!

  33. smallsunnygarden says:

I love that cornflower tucked in among all that abundance of color! Your cup certainly is running over, and very emblematic of summer! Mine is on the scanty side, but I was rather pleased with the effect all the same…: https://www.smallsunnygarden.com/2017/07/03/in-a-vase-elegant-in-brown/

    • Cathy says:

I have learned with IAVOM that our vases don’t need to be abundant to bring us pleasure – but it was definitely the garden’s abundance I was celebrating today 🙂

  34. Wow, magnificent!

  35. Wonderful, Cathy! Your cuttings Border is obviously a huge success! Must show “Mr. Chef” – the amaranthus viridus really caught his attention when we visited.

  36. How wonderful is that lovely bunch Cathy, I love it. Mine was teeny tiny this week https://digwithdorris.wordpress.com
