In a Vase on Monday: The Queen is Dead…Long Live the King!

Dahlia ‘Geoffrey Kent’, Caryopteris ‘Heavenly Blue’ and white Limonium (statice) in a lead grey Prinknash Pottery jug, a tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the day of her funeral and to her son, King Charles III.

Despite this solemn and momentous day in the UK, the IAVOM show still goes on, so please leave the usual links to any vases you have created today from material found in your own gardens.

A beautiful arrangement Cathy, and a lovely tribute. Here is my contribution for today: https://wordsandherbs.wordpress.com/2022/09/19/in-a-vase-on-monday-fit-for-a-queen/

That’s a beautiful mix of flowers to mark a momentous change, not just for the UK but for the world. My garden had a bit of a boost from cooler temperatures and the bit of rain delivered courtesy of Hurricane Kay 10 days ago: https://krispgarden.blogspot.com/2022/09/in-vase-on-monday-change-is-in-air.html

Oh I am so glad you and your garden have felt the benefits of cooler temperatures and some rain, Kris. And yes, I agree the Queen’s death marks a momentous change, although to what I don’t know

Queen Elizabeth II seems to have smiled most of the time, so she must have enjoyed gardening.

  5. Caryopteris ‘Heavenly Blue’ is a most sublime colour and so aptly named Cathy. The floral wreath created for the Queen was touching and beautiful. A most momentous day indeed.

    • Cathy says:

It’s a shame the caropteris shrub itself is so woody- I wonder if I can prune it back even harder than I usually do…? I liked the way the flowers for the wreath were picked from the various royal gardens (although presumably not be any royals themselves), just like IAVOM

It’s a lovely vase, Cathy. I like the looks of your Geoffrey Kent dahlia. I grew Arabian Nights years ago, but found it actually too dark for my taste; your GK looks like a very pleasant alternative!
I can’t help but feel how much sense of stability the Queen’s presence brought to the world; even here it’s had that effect. I hope that is a role which the new King will be able to carry on in his way.
Still no vase nor posts from me–am off to the doctor in a few minutes trying to resolve the weakness, etc, that have been interfering with my gardening and the rest of life! I don’t appreciate having my gardening efforts messed up by health issues!

So sorry to hear you have been ‘under the weather’ Amy – do you think it could be the repsonse to all the stresses of recent years? I really hope you can get the support you need, whether medical or otherwise. This dahlia is a lovely ‘proper’ red – a more common alternative is ‘Blyton Lady in Red’, whch is very similar – I wonder if it is available in the US? You are so right about the Queen’s presence and stabilty – i think that’s exactly how most of us feel, but it took her death to make us realise it

  7. Beautiful colors. A lovely arrangement, Cathy.

  8. So beautiful and fitting.
