In A Vase on Monday: Big Skies

Up at my Mum’s for a few days, I have but a simple and brief offering today: a vase of daffodils, plucked from a bed normally overgrown with reeds and hogweed where they are currently the only visible occupants. Not surprisingly, as you may guess from the brightness of the sky in the photograph, the buds were all fully open by the end of the day in the brilliant Easter sunshine we enjoyed on Sunday. Brilliant sunshine, but still only a few degrees of warmth outside

When the sun shines here the skies are wonderful and there is just so much of them. Feast your eyes on a few of these beauties if you will (the land mass on the horizon is the island of Mull):

Looking down at the ground instead of up at those Big Skies found this enigma: why had this date been inscribed into the black sand on this scrap of beach? Is there a wedding to be celebrated, or the birth of a child to be anticipated? Or maybe it is a sad rather than a happy date, the inscription of which will be washed away by the tide like death washes away our loved ones in due course…

We shall never know, and as yet I don’t know what you will be putting in your Monday vases this week. I will certainly try to visit all your blogs to see them but may not have time to comment, nor reply to all your comments on this post, but I shall do what I can. Normal IAVOM thoroughness will resume again shortly and I know you will forgive me for my laxness this week: Happy Easter break everyone!

  2. What a glorious place your Mum lives in! Wonderful photos. Poignant messages on beaches and carved into rock, we humans like to leave our mark, and they often have a touching beauty. Enjoy your time with your Mum.
Here’s my contribution – so ‘inside’ by comparison: https://daffodilwild.wordpress.com/2018/04/02/mandala-monday/

  3. Oh wow what scenery – gosh. Sitting in wet grey north London. Another world.

  4. Anna says:

Oh what perfect timing Cathy – what fabulous blue skies and scenery. A visit to that part of the country is on my bucket list. A fascinating inscription on the sand – Professor Google advises that there is a total lunar eclipse on that date but as you suggest it could refer to all manner of events 🙂 I hope that you have found your Mum well and that you enjoy your trip. It was snowing here earlier so I’m pleased that I picked my flowers yesterday : https://greentapestry.blogspot.co.uk/2018/04/in-vase-on-monday-shall-i-start-with.html

    • Cathy says:

Oh do take your van up there, Anna – you can camp almost anywhere you choose and as well as the big skies the scenery is often magnificent…but the sky isn’t always blue!

Hi Cathy, what absolutely stunning photographs – and lucky you to see some sun.
And as for the date, by extreme coincidence it’ll be my daughter’s 21st birthday!
Here’s mine, simple but moving (ho ho)

  12. A perfect simple Easter vase. And what a spectacular view and one I would love even if a bit chilly especially the sea and sky….it was a cold (35 degree) day here yesterday with snow in the morning, but I managed a vase although not out of my garden.

The daffodils are lovely, and so is the scenery! Our sky is also a stunning blue this time of year, but since we still have snow the bright spring sunshine can be almost blinding! I have no outdoor blooms to offer yet, but perhaps next week I’ll show you the progress of my little window garden. 🙂

  14. You were lucky to have sun. In Stuttgart, it was mostly cloudy for Easter. I think the date on the beach is an upcoming wedding date. I have a bridal-related arrangement (not my own) to show today. https://enclosuretakerefuge.com/2018/04/02/in-a-vase-on-monday-london/

What lovely skies..and how nice to be spending time with your family. I have a little ‘blueish’ offering: http://noellemace.blogspot.co.uk/2018/04/in-vase-on-monday-easter-eggs.html

  16. What beautiful views. Looks like a perfect spot for a spring get together. Alas our weather sounds like yours: blue skies but still cold with overnight lows below freezing. And now a wintry storm is supposedly coming, though I know spring will get here eventually. My offering is here: http://www.lindabrazill.com/each_little_world/2018/04/ivom-golden-bamboo.html

…and like we too will be washed away in due course! Yes, death is becoming more an more of an issue as we grow older and it’s not always easy to cope with. But seeing the heart in the sand makes me think of a more positive event, a wedding perhaps. And until we’re washed away, let’s be creative and make the most of every day! Love those wide skies and dramatic clouds, Cathy, enjoy your time with your mum. Happy Easter Monday xx https://personaleden.wordpress.com/2018/04/02/in-a-vase-on-an-easter-monday-three-smelly-sisters/

  19. Scenery that is new to me, wow! I love it. Hope you enjoy your visit and vase of Daffodils. Here is my vase http://theshrubqueen.com/2018/04/02/in-a-vase-on-monday-cheers-to-spring

The blue skies are a welcome sight even to my eyes here in normally sunny Southern California. We’ve been fogged in most mornings for the better part of a week, with some days never clearing at all. I hope you enjoy your holiday and your visit with you mum. The scenery is spectacular even if warmth is missing! Here’s my post: https://krispgarden.blogspot.com/2018/04/in-vase-on-monday-getting-into.html

  25. The sunlight is a shot in the arm Cathy. It is dark grey and wet again here today. Looks like you chose s lovely spot to be for Easter. I left my boots outside overnight and had to pour the water out this morning. Yuck. https://digwithdorris.com

  26. Ali says:

That setting is heavenly! You had more sunshine than us!

  27. Big skies indeed! So gorgeous. And I love the simplicity of the daffodils. Truly, I prefer simple sometimes. I am sharing today some simple ones too. For while it is spring here, it has been like an eternal winter. https://theblushbloom.com/the-coterie/2018/3/31/in-a-vase-monday-simply-tulips

How did someone put that date in the sand without leaving footprints?

  30. Lisa at Greenbow says:

Your daffodils are showing great promise as do those blue skies. I can’t wait to see the sun again. Happy IAVOM. I have also filled a vase or two this week.

  31. Chloris says:

Big skies indeed. What amazing views, how wonderful to walk here. I hope you are having a wonderful Easter.

  32. Cathy, I’m glad you’re with your Mother. The photos are magnificent. The landscape is marvellous. The blue sky meets the water. The sunset is really beautiful. The vase with the Daffodils is simple but something more ornate would not fit well with Nature, it is a pure state where the vase that surrounds me is located. The date written in the arena is an enigma. It’s something good. A wedding, maybe? 7/27/2018 will arrive ….. 🙂 Greetings from Margarita.

Beautiful photos of a beautiful landscape! If the date indeed signifies a wedding, I don’t think one could find a more intriguing place for it, if one tried. Daffodils are the perfect Easter flowers, I think. I had fun with bolting cabbages today… https://flutterandhum.wordpress.com/2018/04/02/in-a-vase-on-monday-cabbage-anyone/
