As quickly as the petals drop off the magnolia, the pinker and wider open become the petals of the clematis growing through it, Clematis montana ‘Warwickshire Rose’. At first the magnolia merely took on a subtle pinkish glow, but all of a sudden some buds of the clematis have burst open, waiting till the first dull and damp day for a little while to do so. Along with the rapidly green transformation of the trees, the swelling buds of wisteria and the exuberant growth of re-emerging perennials there is no disputing that spring has been busy with his paintbrush.
Rambling in the Garden 
Lovely imagery. I’ve just realised I have been overlooking several huge opportunities to grow clematis up established trees and shrubs. I think I am always nervous about what the naked stems will look like before they leaf up. But some alpinas growing up the griselina and the sambucus could get me past the “must paint the trellis” thing… For a while…
The friends that came today said that about clematis too – it certainly adds extra colour
That’s a beautiful clematis, striking colour, with perfect complementary purple leaves. Do they stay that colour, or is it the new growth? – it’s not one I’ve seen before. It makes a gorgeous combo with the Magnolia.
I think it always has a darker leaf – but I will check, now that you have asked 🙂
What a great idea to grow a clematis up a magnolia Cathy! I love the photos – you have really captured the mood and inspired me to start adding more clematis to my garden. In particular I need some early flowering ones.
