And Oh! The Roses…

Behind the gate
Are surprises,
Something different
Around every corner.
And oh! The roses…
A feast for the eyes.
Cup of tea please.
The sweet peas are early.
A magical experience,
Delightfully quirky.
Everything’s late.
Welcome! Have you
Been before?
And oh! The roses…
What rose is that?
Have you seen?
Did you see?
Always something new
To delight.
Lemon drizzle
Or coffee?
A riot of plants
And artefacts.
And oh! The roses…
The fragrance just
Hangs in the air.
A haven for wildlife,
So peaceful.
How do you get rid of
Slugs and snails?
What plant is that?
A wonderful hour’s wander,
A garden of love
And oh! The roses…

A poem based on our experience of opening the garden for the National Garden Scheme (NGS), based on comments and questions overheard or shared in the garden, and written comments made on leaving the garden.

That’s lovely Cathy. You must be so pleased with so many kind words about your garden. Love the way you have put the remarks together. Oh, and I’ll have lemon drizzle please! πŸ˜‰

Thanks Cathy – so often it is a case of flitting from visitor to visitor, then checking this and that, answering questions, etc, from start to finish

Some heartwarming comments from your visitors. I think that ‘A garden of love’ sums up your garden in a nutshell Cathy and the roses must have been a treat to wonder at πŸ˜„

    • Cathy says:

Aw thanks, Anna. The comments book may sound like a pat on the back, but it has been useful to know what aspects stand out and what ideas people are taking away

How perfectly you round up your opening. What a brilliantly clever idea – and I’ll have a slice of lemon drizzle and a cup of coffee please, while I sit and smell the roses. 🌹

  10. Cathy is a beautiful poem in which you wonderfully collect the opinions of your garden visitors: I love it. Your roses must be magnificent and I would sit under them to enjoy their fragrance and beauty. Thank you for this beautiful poem. Take good care of the golfer and you. Very affectionate greetings from Margarita.
