This week’s In a Vase on Monday offering consists of ‘ball’ Dahlia ‘Glow’ and Amaranthus caudatus courtesy of the cutting beds, new vase courtesy of lovely blogging friend Anna of Green Tapestry and a now redundant poster courtesy of the NGS.
I am having a rest today but will have plenty of time to catch up with your IAVOM posts, so do see what you can pick from your garden or forage locally to pop in a vase or jam jar to bring you pleasure during the coming week. Rambling in the Garden 
These Dahlias have wonderful colouring, so delicate and beautifully shaped too. I’m sure you’ll have plenty more pickings. I’m looking forward to my amaranthus, I have tiny buds on tiny plants so far. They are good in a vase for adding drama. I hope the opening went well, I look forward to hearing about it.

The first year I grew amaranthus mine were just tiny plants but much better since then – the tassels on my green ones must be about 15″ long (must measure them…) ! 😉
Hello Cathy, I really love your Dahlia ‘Glow’ with its subtle colour gradations. I do hope things went well for you with your open garden and that you enjoy a very good rest today. I hope you have a strong sense of satisfaction having worked so hard to raise money for such a good cause.

Thanks Eleanor – I wasn’t sure about the colours at first but the gradual changes have proved to be most intriguing. Monday is always a busy day with IAVOM but at least there are no other pressures!

That’s a shame – it certainly helps lifting them and starting them off inside where there is less risk of slugs in the early stages
I did, as soon as they go out, they get munched! Next year I’m only putting them very very high up!

Thanks Kate – it makes up for last year when they were so late I had heardly any blooms. I shall definitely do the same this year, potting them up when they are dried out. Still a busy day with IAVOM, but no gardening or baking or planning!

Your dahlias are gorgeous and I think that amaranth is perfect in what ever arrangement. I love it’s dangley self. It looks mysterious and beautiful at the same time.

Is it grown as a crop in Rwanda, Cindy? It is certainly really useful in a vase – not sure how much it needs heat, a;though of course we have had a very warm and dry summer so far here in the UK

‘Glow’ is a lovely Dahlia; it is so funny how much I like dahlias when only a few years ago I wouldn’t have given them house room! But they are such generous plants for cut flowers. Surprisingly not exhausted, Christina, more elated than anything – I was more tired after Wednesday but perhaps there was some nervous tension mixed up in that as it wasa Big Unknown on the first day. But yes, nothing but blog commenting today, apart from swimming and Pilates and Tai Chi of course!! 🙂 Certainly with you on the dahlia issue – exactly how it was for me!

Hmm, I wonder…! The dahlia was part of a free for postage offer from GW, I think, but didn’t flower last year and when I Googled it to get an illustration there seemed to be some discrepancy in what I looked like and the picture I used does not look like these blooms! The ones on the stall were cuttings taken earlier this year – the first time I have tsken cuttings from dahlias. I can certainly save you one for the next time I see you as they are still there – I don’t think any of the dahlias sold. Just my usual Monday stuff today – but I did pick some raspberries and loganberries which were begging to be picked a few days ago but I wanted our visitors to see the abundance!! And a bit of tidying too – but the table went back to its proper place last night so I feel at home again! 🙂

I think I really like dahlias. They are truly a beautiful flower. I will have to see if I can grow them in my neck of the woods.
There are so many different types and varieties, so something for everyone – once you decide that you like them you will be easily hooked!

Congratulations on surviving your first NGS open day – you must feel exhausted but hopefully also very satisfied with a job well done! I am still waiting for my first dahlias – they are close but not quite there and my amaranthus is a few weeks off being pickable, so I have lots to look forward to. I did have plenty of lovely roses but they have finally given up in the heat so I am hoping repeat flowering will start soon.

Lovely dahlias, Cathy, and I do love that long, slender vase with the amaranth draping over! I made a half-hearted try with seeding some amaranth this year, but our ongoing water issues left that project in the dust rather literally. Someday I shall grow them AND use them in vases 😉

Well done Cathy….. glorious Dahlias. Grew a couple back in Kenilworth, and now you have reminded me just how joyful they are. I shall prepare my soil in readiness for next year.

The dahlias are lovely, Cathy, and the vase is perfect. I was out of town, returning tired late on Monday at the tail end of a nasty heatwave, and so have skipped the post this week. I think this is the first time I missed since I started participating in your wonderful meme and I did miss it, as well as the joy of having flowers in the house but I’ll most definitely be back on board next week. Despite the heat (or perhaps because of it), more Lisianthus bloomed while I was off touring gardens in the eastern part of the US.
