Ina Vase on Monday: After the Ball is Over

This week’s In a Vase on Monday offering consists of ‘ball’ Dahlia ‘Glow’ and Amaranthus caudatus courtesy of the cutting beds, new vase courtesy of lovely blogging friend Anna of Green Tapestry and a now redundant poster courtesy of the NGS.

I am having a rest today but will have plenty of time to catch up with your IAVOM posts, so do see what you can pick from your garden or forage locally to pop in a vase or jam jar to bring you pleasure during the coming week. Please also add links to and from this post so we can share in the pleasure your vase brings you – just as this one, with my first ‘proper’ dahlia pickings, will bring to me.

These Dahlias have wonderful colouring, so delicate and beautifully shaped too. I’m sure you’ll have plenty more pickings. I’m looking forward to my amaranthus, I have tiny buds on tiny plants so far. They are good in a vase for adding drama. I hope the opening went well, I look forward to hearing about it.

    • Cathy says:

The first year I grew amaranthus mine were just tiny plants but much better since then – the tassels on my green ones must be about 15″ long (must measure them…) ! 😉

  2. Hello Cathy, I really love your Dahlia ‘Glow’ with its subtle colour gradations. I do hope things went well for you with your open garden and that you enjoy a very good rest today. I hope you have a strong sense of satisfaction having worked so hard to raise money for such a good cause.
After a while away, I have finally organised myself to take and share some photos on a Monday so I can join in again with IaVoM https://warwickshiregardener.wordpress.com/2017/06/26/in-a-vase-on-monday/

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Eleanor – I wasn’t sure about the colours at first but the gradual changes have proved to be most intriguing. Monday is always a busy day with IAVOM but at least there are no other pressures!

  3. Anca Tîrcă says:

Those Dahlia have the most wonderful colour ever!Have a good rest, Cathy! This is my vase:http://timpingradina.blogspot.ro/2017/06/in-vase-on-monday-first-hydrangeas.html

  4. I’ve given up on Dahlias as the slugs eat mine almost immediately! Here’s my Vase https://belleandcandle.com/2017/06/26/in-a-vase-on-monday-cornflowers/

  5. Eliza Waters says:

Such a beautiful, delicate shell-pink colour and perfect form. Aren’t Dahlias wonderful? Enjoy your day of rest, Cathy.

  6. Hi Cathy, the colour combination of the Dahlias and Love-Lies-Bleeding are wonderful, they make a great team. Enjoy your day off
    Here is my vase http://ronaquirkybirdgardener.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/in-vase-on-monday-gorgeous-geraniums.html

    • Cathy says:

I thought the dahlias needed a simple addition and the amaranthus was in the same cutting bed and makes a good match

  7. Fab dahlias and so early too. Enjoy a well earned rest.

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Kate – it makes up for last year when they were so late I had heardly any blooms. I shall definitely do the same this year, potting them up when they are dried out. Still a busy day with IAVOM, but no gardening or baking or planning!

As everyone has mentioned, the colour gradations of Dahlia ‘Glow’ are beautiful! I hope you have a lovely restful Summer day. Here is mine: https://absentgardener.com/2017/06/26/in-a-vase-on-monday-a-mixed-batch/

  10. Your dahlias are gorgeous and I think that amaranth is perfect in what ever arrangement. I love it’s dangley self. It looks mysterious and beautiful at the same time.

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Lisa – I am so pleased I grew to like dahlias (through other blogs, of course!) and to discover amaranthus. I love the green version even more!

  12. I really came to appreciate amaranth in our Rwanda garden, although I just realized that I haven’t seen it that often here in Stuttgart. Perhaps it needs more heat and sun. I’ve arranged roses from my backyard today: https://enclosuretakerefuge.com/2017/06/26/in-a-vase-on-monday-roses/

  13. jenmac13 says:

The colours of those Dahlias are spectacular!
Well done on your open days and thanks for hosting in a vase today when you must be pretty shattered after hosting so many garden visitors. I’d need a three day lie-down after all that, you are an inspiration. 🙂
Today, my bouquet has honeysuckle, roses, and sweetpeas and, I’ve called it The Bees Knees. https://doingtheplan.com/2017/06/26/the-bees-knees/

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Jen – strangely I was more tired after the Weds than the Sunday, despite the latter being busier. I am still on a high I think 🙂

  14. I will join you as a new Dahlia fan. Those are just wonderful and the Amaranth is the perfect color jump. Hope you put your feet up and look at flowers from some other gardens today. Here is my vase http://theshrubqueen.com/2017/06/26/in-a-vase-on-monday-ironic-architecture

Beautiful dahlias Cathy! Have a relaxing day and put your feet up! Hope all went well yesterday. It has been extremely windy here. Thus the title for my vase: https://wordsandherbs.com/2017/06/26/in-a-vase-on-monday-a-strong-summer-breeze/

  17. Peter/Outlaw says:

Oh my, such beautiful dahlias. They’re such a stunning cut flower and this one is especially nice. I hope you enjoyed having guests admire your garden and you must feel very relieved to have your garden to yourself again. Enjoy your rest. My “vase” is here: http://outlawgarden.blogspot.com/2017/06/in-vase-on-monday_26.html

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Peter – and yes, it was good to have objective comments. Shame I couldn’t really answer the universal comment about lack of slug damage…! 😉

  19. You certainly deserve a rest after all your work prepping and then hosting the open garden. Nothing like Dahlias to start the week on a high note! My offering is here: http://www.lindabrazill.com/each_little_world/2017/06/in-a-vase-on-monday-1.html

    • Cathy says:

I have been waiting till these 2 open days were over before I cut any of these dahlias! Luckily they are still in fine fettle 🙂

  20. Christina says:

‘Glow’ is a lovely Dahlia; it is so funny how much I like dahlias when only a few years ago I wouldn’t have given them house room! But they are such generous plants for cut flowers. I do hope you rally are having a rest today, I’m sure you must be exhausted. Here’s my vase, Dahlias here too! https://myhesperidesgarden.wordpress.com/2017/06/26/in-a-vase-on-monday-spoilt-for-choice-2/

    • Cathy says:

Surprisingly not exhausted, Christina, more elated than anything – I was more tired after Wednesday but perhaps there was some nervous tension mixed up in that as it wasa Big Unknown on the first day. But yes, nothing but blog commenting today, apart from swimming and Pilates and Tai Chi of course!! 🙂 Certainly with you on the dahlia issue – exactly how it was for me!

  21. Anna says:

Oh now where have I seen that vase before Cathy? 🙂 Am I right in thinking that ‘Glow’ was one of the dahlias you had for sale on the plant stall? If so I’m kicking myself for being remiss as it is most pretty. Was it seed grown or bought as a tuber? I hope that you are chilling out today. My vase this week is the one that I would not be without :
    https://greentapestry.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/in-vase-on-monday-summer-in-nutshell.html

    • Cathy says:

Hmm, I wonder…! The dahlia was part of a free for postage offer from GW, I think, but didn’t flower last year and when I Googled it to get an illustration there seemed to be some discrepancy in what I looked like and the picture I used does not look like these blooms! The ones on the stall were cuttings taken earlier this year – the first time I have tsken cuttings from dahlias. I can certainly save you one for the next time I see you as they are still there – I don’t think any of the dahlias sold. Just my usual Monday stuff today – but I did pick some raspberries and loganberries which were begging to be picked a few days ago but I wanted our visitors to see the abundance!! And a bit of tidying too – but the table went back to its proper place last night so I feel at home again! 🙂

Beautiful dahlias, Cathy. I hope your open garden days went well. I’m tired after opening ours this weekend; we didn’t do cakes or plant sales so you must be exhausted! Love the vase, too. I have dahlias in my vase this week, plus a few other summer flowers: https://acoastalplot.wordpress.com/2017/06/26/in-a-vase-on-monday-summer/
Thank you, as ever, for hosting this lovely gathering. Sam x

  24. LisaDay says:

I think I really like dahlias. They are truly a beautiful flower. I will have to see if I can grow them in my neck of the woods.

  27. Congratulations on surviving your first NGS open day – you must feel exhausted but hopefully also very satisfied with a job well done! I am still waiting for my first dahlias – they are close but not quite there and my amaranthus is a few weeks off being pickable, so I have lots to look forward to. I did have plenty of lovely roses but they have finally given up in the heat so I am hoping repeat flowering will start soon.

My flowers this week are at: http://peoniesandposies.com/2017/06/26/magnificant-ammi-majus/. They are not strictly flowers on Monday but I hope you won’t mind!

    • Cathy says:

Thnaks Julie – surprisingly not exhausted and just on a high still 🙂 Many of my roses are all in a lull too – certainly not at their best for visitors. Hope you get to pick your own dahlias and amaranthus soon – and of course it doesn’t have to be flowers in our vases so I am off now to see what you have with your Ammi

  28. johnvic8 says:

The dance is over, but I’m sure that the joy lingers on. Congratulations on hosting such a prestigious event in your very own garden. I hope now you will take a bit of rest…and let the Golfer join you for a toddy.

In a Vase on Monday: Celebration

    • Cathy says:

Thanks John and you are right, I am still on a high. We both had a relatively restful day yesterday (always relative) but I need to get some clearing done today – and we have a couple of groups visiting in July so we can’t completely switch off from the garden!

  29. Good morning Cathy,
    What a lovely bouquet.
    Have a wonderful day.
    Flowers greatings from Holland

  30. smallsunnygarden says:

Lovely dahlias, Cathy, and I do love that long, slender vase with the amaranth draping over! I made a half-hearted try with seeding some amaranth this year, but our ongoing water issues left that project in the dust rather literally. Someday I shall grow them AND use them in vases 😉
Big congratulations on your opening! 😀 I wish I had been following along more closely – will have to go back through your posts a bit! Hope you are recovering happily, and I’m sure it was wonderful…
It’s still quite warm here, so today’s vase takes on the colors of the tropics: https://www.smallsunnygarden.com/2017/06/26/in-a-vase-summer-tropicals/

    • Cathy says:

Thanks for your kind comments Amy. Relaxing this week has kept me away from my laptop so replies to comments have been slow coming…

  31. pbmgarden says:

Cathy, your dahlias are so beautiful. Lovely colors. Congratulations on having your garden open for visitors. I’m sure people were delighted with your plants and setting. https://pbmgarden.blog/2017/06/27/in-a-vase-on-monday-cleome/

    • Cathy says:

Thanks, Susie, for your positive xomments – yes, people had a lot of nice things to say but I suppose they might not say the criticisms to my face…! 😉

  32. Chloris says:

Well done Cathy and now you can sit back and rest on your laurels. What lovely dahlias.

  33. Noelle says:

Well done Cathy….. glorious Dahlias. Grew a couple back in Kenilworth, and now you have reminded me just how joyful they are. I shall prepare my soil in readiness for next year.

  34. Kris P says:

The dahlias are lovely, Cathy, and the vase is perfect. I was out of town, returning tired late on Monday at the tail end of a nasty heatwave, and so have skipped the post this week. I think this is the first time I missed since I started participating in your wonderful meme and I did miss it, as well as the joy of having flowers in the house but I’ll most definitely be back on board next week. Despite the heat (or perhaps because of it), more Lisianthus bloomed while I was off touring gardens in the eastern part of the US.

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Kris – I knew in advance this is what I was going to use, the dahlias and the title! 🙂 It must have felt strange not taking part after your loyal contribution over the years… Hurrah for your lisianthus!

  35. Cathy the Dahlias “Glow” have a beautiful shape and colors. The amaranth is very beautiful. A bouquet of flowers that I love. Greetings from Margarita.
