When I saw this ‘desktop’ Easter Island figure on the website from which I was ordering some troughs, and at only a couple of pounds, it was inevitable that it would be snapped up as a potential prop for Monday vases. And here it is, with a kitsch eBay vase, for my Easter Monday offering.
On the ‘island’ are a range of spring flowers, highlighting the variety and abundance of seasonal blooms whilst focussing on the sugary pastel colours on offer. Thus we have blossom from crab apple ‘Evereste’, Pulmonaria ‘Opal’, white Narcissus ‘Petrel’, Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’, Viola ‘Cool Wave Frost’, Clematis alpina ‘Constance’, bluebell Hyacinthoides non-scripta, Lamprocapnos spectabilis, Tulipa ‘Little Beauty’ and the humble wild flower red campion Silene dioica.
The vase has a removable lid with holes to insert the stems, but I supplemented this with a stainless steel frog to hold the stems firm. I have used it once before on IAVOM and although not an everyday vase it works well and does the job with today’s spring flowers, which I know will bring me a lot of pleasure over the next few days. Thanks Christina – I nearly said in the post that the blooms were the best that spring has to offer, but that wouldn’t be the case as there are so many other things too. The first frogs I got came from eBay but were a base metal and rusted which doesn’t do the blooms or th vase any good; the stainless steel ones came from Sarah Raven but she only had 2 sizes, the biggest of which must only be about 2″ and I could do with something bigger. I must google to find out where else I could get them from.
I bought some at Christmas when I went to a florist supper when I did the flowers for my MIL’s funeral. I’ll find the details and send it to you. They do mail order and have a large stock.

Thanks Susie – it was good to use a large range of blooms. The figure was available in all sorts of sizes, but I thought this would be the most useful (and it was the cheapest too!)

Hi Cathy, thanks for sharing another beautiful bouquet. I love the colour and variety and the little Easter island prop. Check Mitchell and Webb on Radio 4 (series 4, ep 5) for a jolly good sketch about Easter Island. Let’s just say the god really liked the massive statues but thought it quite a shame that all the trees, food, and people had to be destroyed to make them.
My vase this week is a mixed bag of my plentiful quince blossom and bluebells, with a few new blooms from the garden this week.

Oh such a fitting celebration Cathy. We’re really spoilt for choice this year with Easter being late. I’ve made a note to add that gorgeous tulipa ‘Little Beauty’ to my wish list. Off shortly to see if Peter Nyssen stock it 🙂 I’m awol today but will enjoy a voyage of vase hopping.
