In a Vase on Monday: Annabelle Has a Party

IMG_7712… and invites her friends.

All of a sudden the immature blooms on Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’ have grown up , blossoming into the huge cotton wool textured clouds that are her trademark. I had to choose one of the smaller clouds for today’s vase otherwise there would have been no room for her friends. The party dress code was pink with a dash of white, accompanied by green accessories. Joining Annabelle were the darkest pink shades of Godetia ‘Azalea Flowered’, Antirrhinum ‘Admiral’s Purple’, Cosmos ‘Candy Stripe’, chunky Sweet William, shy blooms of creamy white sweet pea ‘Cathy’, Teucrium and Bupleurium, all seed grown, and tiny flowers of ground cover Rose ‘The Fairy’ and Salvia ‘Neon’, which weren’t. So far this salvia seems to be the only one of several varieties that has survived for a second year.

IMG_7715I am really pleased with the teucrium which was sown in autumn 2014 and which has made several bushy plants, just coming into flower. I meant to show it in conjunction with herbaceous Clematis durandii (not new, but also doing really well this year) on GBBD but forgot to include the photo, so here it is now:

IMG_7696

I wanted Annabelle to the centre of attention at her own party so gathered the blooms together individually and made a hand tied posy before popping it in a nice rectangular vase I bought earlier this year from a car boot sale, after enjoying seeing similarly shaped vases on Christina’s blog, and supporting it with tiny pebbles; props, in the absence of party poppers, were a tiny cake and a fridge magnet case of wine to ensure the party goes with a swing!

Annabelle.partyThank you to everyone who rose to the ikebana challenge last week – about half of all vases were Japanese style in shape or form, so well done for having a go. It has been suggested that other themed challenges could be set in the future, so let’s wait and see on that one 😉 I have a packet of sweet peas waiting for the name drawn out the hat, selected from the ikebana contributors, and it is Eliza ; I am still uncertain whether I can post seeds to the USA, despite a little research, so Eliza if you yourself know can you pass the information on to me and we can take it from there.

No prizes for today’s vases, which can be free and easy come as you are – join Annabelle’s party with whatever you can find in your own garden or foraged nearby and pop the party goers in a vase , then post links to and from this one as usual.

    Hiya Cathy,

first off: Congrats with your yellow book status. Wonderful news.
the next 12 months will fly by with work and a touch of worry 🙂

    Lovely Burgundy colour scheme.
My Annabelle is still green and titchy.
    My vase post is:

Thank you so much for hosting our Monday treat.

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Joanna – thank you, and yes, I am sure it pays to start planning straight away even if it does seem a long way off. My Annbelle went very quickly from green and titchy to big and fluffy – hope yours does too!

  3. Cathy says:

Pink is the perfect accessory for Annabelle, and I love the mixture of textures that the Sweet Williams and Teucrium add. I love Teucrium too – it spreads like mad in the steepest part of the rockery filling in gaps nicely. My colour scheme is quite different to yours this week. Thanks for hosting Cathy!

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Cathy – I have heard other people suggest teucrium can spread, but I shall play it by ear as there is a difference between borders and gaps in a steep rockery!

  4. Love the party theme. I’m out and about today so I’ll be a little late – apologies Annabelle!

  5. Noelle says:

Very fetching, has raised my spirits, love the flowers you have chosen, and well done on the growing of them too! Here is my contribution today: some clematis: http://noellemace.blogspot.co.uk/2016/07/in-vase-on-monday-clematis-rule-ok.html

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Noelle, and I am sorry you feel your spirits needed lifting – hope you are feeling more yourself now. Look forward to seeing your clematis!

Pink is definitely the right companion for Annabel, I also like the idea of tying your bouquet together before putting it into pebbles, I’ll use that idea, thank you. Here’s my post: https://myhesperidesgarden.wordpress.com/2016/07/18/in-a-vase-on-monday-hot-pinks-and/

  8. Oh Cathy what a stunning deep pink vase….and I love that color against Annabelle. She has made a demur visit to one of my vases this week too with her handmaidens. I keep forgetting to use my square vase so I will look to do that in the future. Love how your posy fits perfectly in yours.

Here is my post this week that features white hydrangeas in vases:

Simply The Best Natives-Wild Bleeding Heart

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Donna – I am enjoying looking at it while I write, especially because of these deep pinks. The larger side of this vase is about 6″ square so it is quite chunky but today’s blooms were the perfect proportions for it

Annabelle is lovely, and I’m excited to see the Teucrium, I’ve just planted some so something to look forward to. Here’s my vase, not dressed for the party I’m afraid, sporting red, white, and green.

    • Cathy says:

It has taken its time to begin to bulk up and astart flowering but after all it is a perennial and I did start with the seed – I am loving its spikes!

  11. Another gorgeous vase full of flowers. Annabelle is beyond her glory here in my garden. Her blooms have all turned to a green tint with some brown edges. The heat and drought of June didn’t allow her to last long this year. All of your pinks look so pretty. I love the clematis. Happy Monday.

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Lisa – in the UK she has a long season, first with the immature heads, then the mature ones, and then the dried heads which look attractive for as long as they are left. Sorry yours is in the descendency 😦

  12. The Chartreusey Whites and deep pinks are perfect together! My northern garden could never support an Annabelle (too dry shade) so thanks for sharing yours! Who wouldn’t want a glass of wine? And for something completely different here is my vase:https://theshrubqueen.wordpress.com/2016/07/18/in-a-vase-on-monday-bromeliads-singing-the-blues

  13. Beautiful! I love Annabelle hydrangeas. Today, I have roses from the garden in my vase: https://enclosuretakerefuge.com/2016/07/18/in-a-vase-on-monday-roziz/

  14. Annabelle may have had the party but I think her pink guests are outshining her! My bouquet is here: http://eachlittleworld.typepad.com/each_little_world/2016/07/in-a-vas-on-monday-ikebana-challenge-a-little-late.html

    • Cathy says:

They are now Linda as she is looking a little sickly – too much wine and cake? But I especially like the pinks too 😉

  15. Well you could have had Annabelles party as a theme. ?! Certainly is a lovely colour combo. I have all sorts shading themselves this week. https://digwithdorris.wordpress.com

  16. Anna says:

Oh I’m glad to see that my most pretty namesake is being fêted with bubbles and cake and that she’s in excellent company. The perfect ingredients for a good party. That clematis and teucrium combination is most striking Cathy. My vase is here :
    https://greentapestry.blogspot.co.uk/2016/07/in-vase-on-monday-im-little-teapot.html

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Anna – and my Annabelle is indeed very happy with her lot and welcomes us every time we go out of the back door! I love the teucrium & clematis combination too

  17. Eliza Waters says:

LOVE, love, love this arrangement, Cathy. A sweet party theme idea, too. I’m sure Annabelle enjoyed her party. 😉 Although I am thrilled to have won the drawing, sadly, I doubt our USDA would allow the seeds to pass customs. Can I donate them to Dorris?
Here’s my eye popper this week: http://wp.me/p3O3z4-1aF

    • Cathy says:

Aw, thanks Eliza – and I am so sorry that you think ‘USDA’ would not allow the seeds. I just couldn’t find a definitive answer online. I will offer them to Dorris as you request – thanks for being understanding

  18. It’s a party indeed! My contribution almost continues the color scheme: http://www.thedangergarden.com/2016/07/in-vase-on-monday-lilies.html

  19. Annabelle throws a great party! I haven’t tried the hand-tied approach to assembling flowers but it looks like a good idea to ensure that they stay where they’re put. Here’s my post: http://krispgarden.blogspot.com/2016/07/in-vase-on-monday-ive-got-blues.html

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Kris – I have used the hand tied approach a couple of times before, probably when the vase has a wide opening. It looked really pretty as a posy!

  22. Peter/Outlaw says:

Annabelle and her friends look like they’re having a great party! Another great Monday Vase Cathy! I was a bit lazy this week and shared some plant arrangements in pots: http://outlawgarden.blogspot.com/2016/07/in-vase-sort-of-on-mondayfoliage-follow.html

  23. Beautiful selection of flowers for your vase and the stones give that added touch. Thanks for hosting this meme. I am a newcomer (my second contribution) but you have inspired me to take a few cuttings from my garden once a month and share them along with my Bloom Day post, and I am enjoying it! 26. Lovely as always, Cathy. I like your ideas for challenges and themes 😉 Your Sweet William so so wonderfully intense! My vases today are hand made pots, much lovelier themselves than the few stems in them. But I hope you will like them ❤ ❤ ❤ https://forestgardenblog.wordpress.com/2016/07/18/not-just-a-vase-pots-by-dorothy-steele/

  27. Really love creamy minty-green combined with hot pink! Annabelle also looks absoluteley gorgeous and does continuously give me “umbel-envy”… My balcony only allows enough space for one shrub, though. Which is (and probably always will be) an extremely fragrant Cestrum nocturnum. It also blooms in pale minty green, but is practically invisible throughout the day. Pink is a colour which I totally neglected this year. I only ever realize this, when putting together a vase. Or maybe it’s just, that my Sweet Peas are extremely lagging behind. (I sowed very late, ’cause we had mad heat waves in July/August in Germany last year). Usually I have some “Promises” or “Gwendolines” right about now. Nevertheless,

  28. I put together 2 vases today. One in warmer pastel shades, the other in blues, combined with silver leaves. https://sweetpeasandsavory.wordpress.com/2016/07/18/warm-pastel-cloud-and-a-silver-blue-lining/

  29. Julie says:

A lovely combination again Cathy – quite a party going on. I noticed from a comment above that you are a bit concerned about Annabelle’s staying power. I use Annabelle a lot without any problems but I always make sure to condition her in a jug of water up to her neck overnight before using her and best pick her early in the morning, putting the stem straight into water as you cut. Re cut when you condition & re cut again when you make the hand tied. If you can get your wilting bloom out put the whole flower under water for a while – that usually perks things up!

I am so sorry I have been absent for a few weeks – life has been extremely hectic. Hopefully I will be back here and back to blogging/reading blogs very soon. I am missing you all! xx

    • Cathy says:

I hope you have been busy with good and happy things Julie as we have missed you too. That’s a really useful tip about cutting Annabelle and I will take it on board imnediately – thanks for that

That teucrium’s super. How tall is it?

Here’s mine this week, rather diminutive in contrast to your lovely array.

    • Cathy says:

The teucrium is probably 2-3 feet now – and I am keeping a watchful eye on it as people have suggested it can spread…
