Garden Bloggers Foliage Day: The Secret

TheSecretButter yellow
Copper
Burnished bronze
Green
And gold,
The witch hazels
Are the first,
Quietly turning
The page
From summer
To autumn.
Glowing
In the mellowness
Of late afternoon sun
They watch
The others
Cling to
Summer finery
Without envy,
With no regret,
Harbouring a secret
None of these
Will share.
tripartite buds
Discretely wait,
In time will swell
Will break
Will hatch
Spidery blooms
When all else
Lies silent.

You have given us a very creative way to present a picture of your garden…and your dreams. Thank you. I hope you won’t mind if I am able to use your presentation idea in the future.

    Lovely words and pictures Cathy.

  3. Pauline says:

Lovely photos and words about your witch hazels, mine are still a vibrant green!

  4. rusty duck says:

    Excellent Cathy.
The trouble is, one of my witch hazels (Diane) is starting to bloom now. Help…!

  5. Amy says:

Simply beautiful, Cathy; and your poem goes far to explain your love for witch hazels. I can see that if they could grow in my garden, you would have me trying them out within a year 🙂

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Amy – there is so much to recommend them. The leaf colour, even though they are not large trees (no more than 1.5 metres), is spectacular just now and of course flowers in winter are always to be celebrated.

  6. Noelle says:

Lovely poem and great pictures, celebrating this plant and season.

  7. Lovely poem Cathy – all this and bricklaying too! You have reminded me to check whether my witch hazel has a good crop of buds, it has been so dry this year I fear it might have suffered.

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Janet – this is the first year I have realised how early the buds form. Only one of mine has a distinct lack of buds – same one as last year.

  8. Brian Skeys says:

Well matched pictures and words Cathy.

  9. Gorgeous pictures, love the wonderful colors of fall.
