In a Vase on Monday: Purple Haze

IMG_1640I realised yesterday that whilst I was rambling I was subconsciously also ‘prowling’, looking for ideas for today’s vase. The dark purple hyacinth that had recently opened in a container down the side of the house was the most likely contender, as it was one of a mixed collection of hyacinths that came free with something else and as such I had no qualms at all about cutting it. This produced the title but then required other purple hued flowers to complement it. Sprigs of a pink wallflower acquired over 18 months ago but so far having failed to flower were definite contenders because at last there were flowerbuds with a hint of colour! Still at their height, a couple of multi-headed hellebores were also  chosen, even though I knew their life in a vase would be limited and, in the hope that this might encourage more flowers, a couple of the purple drumstick primulas. A pulmonaria was also included but is barely noticeable and on hindsight was not necessary.

Foliage was harder to come by and although I was hoping for heuchera leaves there were none with long enough stems that hadn’t been mangled by whatever mangles heuchera leaves during the season. Fresh tendrils of honeysuckle were investigated as most had purple backs to their young green faces but again length was an issue until I found two suitably long shoots on the honeysuckle being trained up a tree in the woodland. To provide some ‘haze’ and a loosely purple link some ethereal wild plum blossom was the final piece in the jigsaw.

In the absence of a container in anything remotely purple, a short dumpy glass vase was chosen, but filled with amethyst crystals which also had the benefit of supporting the stems. The backdrop is a textile created and hand dyed with natural dyes by Younger Sister and the last minute addition of a teeny tiny purple teddy completed today’s display. Suddenly, there is a far greater choice of raw materials available and already I am hankering after next week’s vase, such is the pleasure of this challenge!

If you would like to join in, find flowers or foliage or whatever in the garden or thereabouts and post a picture of your creation, leaving a link to this post and a comment on this blog with a link back to yours. In no way is it a competition to create the most inspiring vase – just see it as a personal challenge and enjoy the creation process, as I and others have done.

  1. Oh you are good ! i am such a wuss I can’t bear to cut flowers in my own garden, and always end up buying flowers for vases! Why is that ? When I do make myself pick blooms from the garden, they give me so much more pleasure than bought ones! Love your arrangement and the pinky/ purple tones !

Oh Jane! A few years ago I used to pick a little posy each week to take to work to remind me of the garden but things just got too busy and it stopped. Now having more time (and no going out to work – hurrah!) I decided it would be good to start again, and blogging about it ensures I do it. They are still usually only little posies but they are giving me so much pleasure, as is the challenge of putting it together. I can ignore the cheap flowers in Aldi now! Thanks for your kind comments – and do please join in, even if only as and when….

Cathy, I like this a lot. Your fresh materials work wonderfully together in this purple-themed arrangement. The quilted textile is a perfect backdrop and the amethyst crystals really dress up the vase (which didn’t look dumpy at all anyway!). It’s surprising to see how many things you have in bloom now. I love the hyacinth and can see how its purple hues helped you develop your theme today. Isn’t it fun how the ideas finally gel and we lock in on a direction. Thanks for hosting. I’m enjoying this challenge each week. My contribution is at https://pbmgarden.wordpress.com/2014/03/17/in-a-vase-on-monday-a-beacon-of-spring/

Thanks Susie – I know I used the word dumpy for the vase, but I actually like it very much. You are so right about how the ideas come together and I look forward to seeing your beacon 🙂

A lovely colour combination! I have joined in this week, and here’s a link to my post:

    Thanks Cathy!

The drumstick primular is the perfect addition to Miss Saigon if that is who she proves to be.

    • Cathy says:

Thanks Christina – one of the drumstick stems was much slimmer than the other one and I had to try and discreetly prop it up 😉

  5. So pretty, and I love the idea of a Monday vase of flowers

What a fantastic colour combination Cathy – I think the hyacinth is a variety called Woodstock – I have a few of this one in my garden but they are not quite out yet. The addition of all the purple hued flowers works so well to give a more natural look to the hyacinth. These are quite a hard flower to integrate into a mixed arrangement. AS ever I love your props – the little bear is so cute and I love the idea of filling a vase with coloured crystals – another item for my shopping list I think.

Thanks Julie – I must admit I do like this dark purple hyacinth and have to confess I have only grown white and blue before, starting in the hyacinth glasses and them shoving them outside after they have (or have not!) flowered. I have lots of crystals, so they are a readily available prop – although I since realised I have a couple of purple vases after all, although too big for this arrangement though

This is my kind of vase – beautiful fresh and a little on the wild side. Just gorgeous Cathy! Sorry I haven’t joined in for a while but the figs have been calling! Busy, busy…. still enjoy seeing your creations though 🙂

    • Cathy says:

Thank you Sarah – you’ve got me thinking now, a vase entitled ‘Walk on the Wild Side…. start with the title then find the flowers…?! Glad you are still about and look forward to your own creations again when the figs are a little less demanding!

  9. Annette says:

These are my favourite colours, Cathy! What a lovely bouquet and perfectly displayed. I wanted to join in and have two vases sitting there but oh, time… It’s good to see yours though!

    • Cathy says:

Thank you Annette – yes, 60 seconds worth of distance run in every minute….it’s tough sometimes, isn’t it? I am sure you are working on some exciting projects though..
